Is There Any Way To Make It Play Itself? (Real Time Games update)

A few months back I wrote a niche post about an idea we have at timotheories.

I put it fairly directly at the time, and it still rings true, but I’ll expand on that idea today. The idea was one that might be obvious, but like many obvious ideas, it should be repeated. BECAUSE it’s important – Board games have been associated with children, fun, and idle time for a few decades, but the truth is that not only are they a lot of fun, they are now absolutely useful and necessary in our culture.

And they will continue to be a key feature of life as we become more reliant on digital tech to work, communicate, and conduct most affairs in our personal lives.

The reason for this need is that board games do something that is really is important for human beings, but which cannot be achieved via digital tech. Direct human contact.

See a little light bulb just went off, didn’t it?

But before we continue, we should clarify that much like realm of advertising, which is a component of marketing, and not a root word, board games are a facet of something larger and should be used in context. As dogs are to mammals, board games are a type of table top gaming.

Table top gaming can refer to games played with dice, cards, on a board, with tiles, timers, miniatures, wargames, and any other variation that would be done on a flat surface. Which is what separates them from live action role-playing games, video games or sports games. Which is why I would make the argument that playing sports or playing video games in the same room as your friends works decently well too. But video games aren’t made that way any more

As for the politics surrounding chance for strategy in table top gaming, let’s not get into that today.

This is where Real Time Games came into the fold – Real Time Games, as I’ve mentioned before, is about people and sharing the joy of board games with them. My brother Ryan and I set up a weekly gaming group so that we could ensure that we spread the message, so-to-speak, about the hundreds of hobby games now available and which have slowly been cropping up since the turn of the century.

Nowadays, there are all kinds of hobby websites, YouTube channels, brick-and-mortar stores, and organizations that help promote this niche industry. But the proletariat are less versed in culture shift that needs to take place.

Yes, it’s happening, but ever-so-slowly, which is ironic given the motility we are supposed to have with the current technology at our fingertips.

And so we play different games every week, with the intent of sharing the social value of the games that we play. And my original plan was to develop a video series for Real Time Games wherein we discussed the value of said games via a standard table top review. But it occurred to me that that wasn’t a realistic use of Ryan’s time, and he wasn’t comfortable getting in front of the camera to declare expertise. So the idea sat, and ruminated for 6 months or so.

But now it looks like I have found a new partner in crime, and so Real Time Games evolves to become more timely delivering content to those who are using technology but looking for analog connection.

So please stay tuned as that idea unfolds. Because we’ll be discussing the latest and greatest at Edmonton’s new hot spot, The Gamer’s Lodge. I’m not going to reveal any more, since I’m out of theories for today, but stay tuned as I work with my new partner to set up this regular service and help flesh out our community.

Spring Cleaning (timotheories March 2016)

Hey there, dear readers! It’s update time! Which of course means trading in a shorter post today for a preview of things to come this month.

16638657367_d3c0d5cb46_o

*Disclaimer* As always, every week I  purchase an album and movie one week ahead of the actual review release so if you follow me on instagram (@timotheories), you should already know what’s coming up on March 7th and 8th! But EVEN I DON’T KNOW what is coming on the 14, 15, 21, 22, 28, and 29. Yet.

So let us dig in and I’ll cover off most of the March topics so you have an idea of what to expect this month on timotheories.

Stimulating Sundays – (03/06) March interview, (03/13) how my art practice works, (03/20) Cross Talk Ep.3, (03/27) routines of famous creatives
Melodic Mondays – (03/07) The 1975 are up next, (03/14) (03/21) (03/28) A MYSTERY! If a physical copy of The Life Of Pablo does show up in the stands, I’ll review it this month, #notholdingmybreaththough
Theatrical Tuesdays – (03/08) Room, (03/15) The Night Before, (03/22) (03/29)… more 2016 Oscars related entries!
Wisdom Wednesdays – (03/09) health matters, (03/16) time management, (03/23) Pinterest, (03/30) New Yorker art section
Timely Thursday – (03/10) Libraries, (03/17) look at some of my art, (03/24) a concert, (03/31) Easter

See, I promised you a year of all killer, no filler. And I think we’re delivering so far. Right?

6276133586_3fa0066b84

And I was “mostly” correct with my video release predictions for February too. We shared the Lucas Chaisson interview, Cross Talk Ep.2, and the Space:Nunz interview. The only one that got messed up was RTG, but I can promise you this, the RTG videos are going to be more content packed then originally anticipated, so I will do what I can to begin releasing them in March, but it all depends on how quickly post-production wraps up.

Now let’s talk more detail on the March timotheories interviews. This month we have a very talented multi-talented artist who is big advocate on education and manages to learn, run a business, and make art at the same time. You aren’t going to want to miss this one folks!

AND last, but definitely not least Cross Talk Ep.3 begins production this weekend. Have you ever watched a movie, and years later learned that a remake was coming down the road? I’m sure you wondered if the remake was going to be a shot-for-shot duplication, an homage or a re-imagining. We’re going to dive into this top on March 20th, so be sure pencil it in!

And that’s it dear readers, now you are in the know. I’m out of theories and timely things for the week, so have an excellent weekend, and I’ll catch you on Sunday for this month’s interview!

Of course you can leave some comments, and subscribe to the blog too!

Now With Less Pulp (timotheories February 2016)

Hey there dear readers, today’s Timely Thursday post is gonna be relatively quick one. I just wanted to give you an update on some exciting developments coming down the pipe in the next few weeks.

The plan for a continued all killer, no filler year at timotheories is well under way and doesn’t look to slow down from here on out. It might just kill me put this content up on the regular, but I expect that it will be totally worth it. Let me break it down in a story for you…

You know that feeling when you buy the pasta at a restaurant because it’s cheap and you later regret the food baby in your belly? You could have got the slightly more expensive steak and vegetables, which not only would have given you your recommended intake of nutrients, but it would have left you feeling rosy?

NOT that I am endorsing either a carnivore or herbivore diet on timotheories, I leave that up to people much more invested in the ways of eating than I.

Feel free to substitute other protein rich foods like nuts, cottage cheese, etc. instead, if that’s your bag.

You don’t want to talk filler, trust me.

Which reminds me, if you think expressing music tastes can polarize a room, try talking about the kinds of food to eat and the ways to prepare them. Whoever teaches etiquette should really add that word to the list of table topics to avoid “at dinner” (of all ironies) or when “on the town.” That means don’t discuss food, music, money, religion, sex, and politics. Cut out the pulp.

So what can we talk about timotheories?

Well my friends, have I got something for you to share at the water cooler!

For starters, this weekend I am going to be recording the second episode of Cross Talk (intro post is here, episode is here) with cohost Chris Murphy. And we will be releasing that some time before the end of February – the topic is Realism VS Escapism in Film. Exciting, no?

Next up on the docket – timotheories interviews! I’ve been hinting at the release of the full length Lucas Chaisson interview since last Sunday, but this Sunday it’s going to be up in all of it’s glory. Preview clip below is here, in case you missed it last Sunday…

But that’s not it for interviews! Oh no! We’re also going to host the next of the interview series before the end of February; featuring a couple of musical comedians called Space Nunz. That promises to be a fun and fancy interview too!

AND last, but certainly not least, I’m going to put together the first ever Real Time Games (RTG) video for you. Explanation clip of RTG here. That’s right, I’ve mentioned it a couple of times now, but it’s finally going to show up into the rotation. So get ready for it sometime in soon! *Fingers crossed for February*

And that’s it dear readers, now you are in the know. I’m out of theories and timely things for the week, so have an excellent weekend, and I’ll catch you on Sunday for this month’s interview!

Ante Up! (timotheories 2016)

Well, another year over, and a new one just begun. (Or to put it another way – I think 2015 was great, but for 2016 I just can’t wait!)

Have you ever listened to that original Christmas song by John Lennon and Yoko Ono? It’s called Happy Xmas (War Is Over), which might be obvious to you if you like(d) The Beatles, were alive in the 70’s and/or are British.

This is one of those songs which everyone has heard in some capacity, but I suspect that not all of us realize the connection with John Lennon. I mention this because it has been covered A LOT in the past couple of decades by a number of different recording artists.

The one that I am most familiar with and enjoy the most is done by an emo indie band called Sense Field. They were popular in the early 2000s and similar in sound to Jimmy Eat World if that helps you get a sense of what to expect from them. Check the song out here, you might enjoy it.

Anyways, it’s time to start connecting the dots.

I hope all of you enjoyed your Christmas, Kwanzaa, Hanukkah, and Festivus breaks, dear readers, because it’s time to make this year on timotheories the most memorable one yet!

It’s incredibly convenient that memories serve as little reminders of a mission completed, a task checked off, of a lesson learned. Don’t you think?

And that is what today is all about. You see, I took a week off of timotheories if you haven’t visited us in a while.

I did this because it was Christmas time for me, my family, and girlfriend’s family. I always plan my life this way around the Christmas and New Year’s season, because I know that a lot of things go down at this time of year, and it can be difficult to fit it all in if I don’t make room in my schedule for it.

Which is why it’s time for me to get started with taking my organization to the next level, and I’m going to share some of my plans with you to inspire you and to also give you a better idea of what to expect after the Timely Thursday post I left you with on December 24th. Check it out here for a refresher.

You see I’ve been sick the past couple of days, and whenever I get sick, I get to thinking and I also get to movie watching. It’s always been something I’ve done when I was under the weather. Think about life, make adjustments, and watch movies.

Which may be part of the reason why I invented the Watch List.

And so I’ve come up with a short list of what to expect for sure in 2016, though there will definitely be some surprises in store too. Below is what I’ve thought about during my time away.

  1. I am going to put together an interview with a local artist and release it every month. That means 12 interviews this year. This will go on my timotheories YouTube channel, currently called timotheories Interviews. Exciting right?
  2. For the first time ever, timotheories will start releasing another series of videos on my YouTube channel called timotheories presents CrossTalk – where I and my not yet named co-host will address themes which are hidden in films. It will feel like a conversation, as opposed to a “best of”, “top 10”, “review” series. Think barroom philosophy meets YouTube production. This will likely also be released once a month, but the frequency will depend on how often we can get content together
  3. I host a weekly “game night” at my house which has now come under the fold of timotheories presents Real Time Games. Real Time Games is a recognition of the inherent value of socialization in an ever-inward facing world and a challenge to pick up board games to get much needed interaction with other human beings. We will be releasing video reviews (minimum one a month) that explain the game in a fun and straightforward way. We make board games accessible for all.
  4. I am going to continue to release 5 posts a week under the main timotheories banner.
    • Stimulating Sunday posts will be about theories in the arts and new content to the brand
    • Melodic Monday posts will feature music reviews (either local or international)
    • Theatrical Tuesday posts will zero in on film releases (in cinema or for home) and local theatre
    • Wisdom Wednesday posts will provide you with ideas for your art practice and motivation
    • Timely Thursday posts will be topical, whether it’s what is going on in the world or more personal

And that’s about it for theories right now!

It might seem a little ambitious my friends, but I promise that the further along we go, the more this will benefit you and by the time 2016 is over, we’ll be surprised by all that has been accomplished.

Check back tomorrow for an exciting album review and if you want to hear more about my personal goals for 2016, be sure to tune in on Thursday for another timely post!

My Friend Gwen (timotheories presents: Real Time Games)

Running, running
As fast as we can
Do you think we’ll make it?
(Do you think we’ll make it?)
We’re running
Keep holding my hand
It’s so we don’t get separated

If you’ve been following my blog for a little while now, you may have noticed I have a bit of a thing for Gwen Stefani and obviously No Doubt too.

I don’t necessarily mean a sexual thing, I mean yes, technically she is attractive. That’s empirically evident. Ask any woman, and she’ll tell you Stefani is a good looking woman. And she takes care of herself.

And no, I don’t mean that she has to be physically fit in order to look good, I just mean that it is clear to me that she is being who she needs to be in order to be a useful adult, and take care of her children.

But what does that have to do with this weeks post? Well not a lot, to be perfectly honest. Just kidding, most of what I post has some relation to the theme. For instance, I associate certain words with pop culture, especially when I am on auto-pilot.

Also, I’m feeling rushed today.

Remember last week on timotheories (this past Stimulating Sunday), when I mentioned that I would be hosting a weekly game night in my humble abode?

Of course you do, dear readers, you have memories like elephants, and you always keep me in line.

lwe3me

Well I’m hosting my first publicly notified game night, tonight. And so I am rushing around. Hence, the word running being trapped in my noggin, and the associated No Doubt lyrics along with it.

Okay I’ll admit this post might feel a little rushed when you are reading it, but it is Timely Thursday after all, so that feeling is not out of place, especially when you stop and think about it.

But I’m not here to write more about the value of board games, no I want to talk about Real Time Games (RTG). The board game group that I am starting with my youngest brother Ryan.

RTG is a simple idea started by a couple of board game enthusiasts where we play games with people we know once a week. Now we’re not just going to be playing Monopoly and Pictionary mind you.

RTG is about people and sharing the joy of board games with them.

And so we will play different games every week, with the intent of also sharing reviews on a fair number of the games that wee play. So stay tuned as that idea unfolds. Because I think you are going to really enjoy what we have to say.

Let me give you an overview of how RTG is going to get it’s message out there.

  1. We’ll share what kind of game it is
  2. We’ll talk about the art and design components
  3. We’ll describe the quality of the game (enjoyment)
  4. We’ll go over the pros and cons
  5. We’ll explain what makes the game unique
  6. We’ll consider if there is anything that could be fixed

But that’s just a slice of the pizza pie.

We will also put together a second review video that details the following

  1. Game set up
  2. Watching the game in progress
  3. Special rules and strategies
  4. Highlights of play from a game night

That sounds super cool Tim! But wait, did you say video back there?

Very observant my friends, yes, yes I did. Well the truth is, I will be making reviews with Ryan, and potentially a special guest at some point. But these reviews aren’t primarily going to feature on timotheories. They might get special mention from time to time, or be used as a vehicle for an idea, but RTG is going to stay on YouTube in my timotheories group for the time.

Now I happen to think that is pretty cool, and it’s timely, because it’s something happening in Edmonton. If you live here, and are interested in attending a session, please send me a comment or look for timotheories presents: RTG on Facebook.

I just might even share my trials and triumphs in the recording process with you as I experience the fun of video.

Before I close out this post though, let’s make reference to that Gwen Stefani association one more time. See, by hosting something that gets me out of my comfort zone, but which revolves around something I am passionate about, I’m emulating after one of my role models.

And that is one of timotheories focal points, to foster positive experiences with the arts. Because it makes us better people. But that’s just my theory. What do you think? Leave me a comment or two!

Tim!
