The History of Horror Movies (Cross Talk EP 38)

Horror movies represent a particularly special blend of storytelling and emotional triggers.

Some argue that horror movies are meant to reveal our deepest fears, others suggest they serve as morality tales about what is acceptable in society and the consqeuences of going against the natural order, still others believe that they serve as a mirror of their time. Whatever the case the telling of terrifying stories is something which has long been part of our collective cultural experience, and as horror movies became a more common format in cinema, so too did they evolve over time.

In this very special episode of Cross Talk, Chris and I take some time to give a somewhat concise overview of the history of the horror genre, all the way from the 1920s through to present day – landing the plane with Get Out, It Comes at Night,  The Killing of a Sacred Deer, IT, Better Watch Out, and a few others!

We make some obvious associations, like the birth of the slasher in the 1960s, and the over-saturation of the theme in the 1980s, the importance of the atomic age and how films of the 1950s all had a twinge of the absurd, which paved the way for cross-over genre films in later decades.

Of particular note is the importance of social issues and their place within the oeuvre of George A. Romero and other landmark directors, including the eponymous Alfred Hitchcock, who helped take horror from the realm of fear of the unknown and the mythological, and thrust it into the everyday.

And one of my favourite highlights – the first commercially successful and critically acclaimed Marvel movie is also a horror movie.

As it turns out,  I actually have a lot to say about the genre, and while my personal collection of films is closer to 2000 then 1000 at this point, I have almost 150 titles then could be classified at horror movies. Chris is a self-admitted horror fan, but it seems that we both know enough to provide a good overview of the genre, and hopefully share some theories you haven’t heard before!

This is the history of Horror movies, this is episode thirty eight of Cross Talk.

theories Summarized

Were you surprised by our thoughts on the genre overall? Did you learn anything interesting? Was our feedback on Alien vs Aliens too on the nose? I was personally surprised how many remakes came out in the 2000s and found it really valuable to learn how the 1940s was the period when genre sharing started to become more common.

Sharing is caring creative cuties, hopefully you’ve got some examples that we’ve never even considered, so comment below! And of course we’d love to hear from you in general, so please comment with your favourite horror picks, what you’ve pulled from each of these decades, and why you think horror reflects the current times best.

Until next time, please like and share the content! And subscribe to the mailing list if you haven’t yet. I’ll be sharing some insights on a new Brent Cobb album!

Who Ya Gonna Call? (Cross Talk Ep. 3)

Spring is officially here dear readers! And that means it’s time for change, warmth, and appreciation. The circle of life, in all of it’s perfection. Death and rebirth.

If you want another less literal example, in the form of a metaphor, it’s like a phoenix rising from the ashes.

Frankly, it just feels good to step out of your home after a long winter; to remove those extra layers, and start spending time in nature – Maybe with a cool drink? Watching new life form from old, colour stem from the bland. Activity starts to peak all around and we get excited for the future.

How convenient then that this month’s Cross Talk episode is all about remakes in film. That’s right, we’re going to explore the depths of the film industry and discuss the supposed epidemic of movie remakes, how valuable they are, and whether or not Hollywood should give up the goose and get back to creativity.

As often is the case with assumption, there is a general sense from movie goers, that studios will cash in on successful franchises more often then they will venture outside and make a bet on a dark horse. That and the assumption that the general populace hates remakes.

Which is why Chris and I have decided to embrace the season and the hot topic of remakes with our atypical blend of humour, passion, and comfortability. We will ease you right in, much like a newborn, inviting you into the blossoming garden.

Okay, we’re sick of the spring metaophors timotheories!

All right, I can take a hint! I’ll dial it back. But not before I make a quick phone call to a beloved franchise that is about to hit *69 on everyone’s landline. #yeahiwentthere

Sure, Spider-man’s new costume is #hype right now, but what about the new Ghostbusters trailer, holy Moses that is getting a ton of internet hate. Especially as it relates to straw-men of gender and race. You’ll want to watch this episode for our thoughts on that pop culture gem alone.

I’ve included a direct link to the full video for you here, but as always the real action is just below for your convenience. If you want to jump right into the Ghostbusters debate, look for the 12:30 mark, otherwise, please sit back and enjoy Episode 3 of Cross Talk!

I’m out of theories for now, but please check back tomorrow for an untitled and unmastered album review. Something completely original, in other words. Please comment, subscribe and share this with you friends. We want to hear your feedback!

Hey there, dear readers! It’s update time! Which of course means trading in a shorter post today for a preview of things to come this month.

*Disclaimer* As always, every week I  purchase an album and movie one week ahead of the actual review release so if you follow me on instagram (@timotheories), you should already know what’s coming up on March 7th and 8th! But EVEN I DON’T KNOW what is coming on the 14, 15, 21, 22, 28, and 29. Yet.

So let us dig in and I’ll cover off most of the March topics so you have an idea of what to expect this month on timotheories.

Stimulating Sundays – (03/06) March interview, (03/13) how my art practice works, (03/20) Cross Talk Ep.3, (03/27) routines of famous creatives
Melodic Mondays – (03/07) The 1975 are up next, (03/14) (03/21) (03/28) A MYSTERY! If a physical copy of The Life Of Pablo does show up in the stands, I’ll review it this month, #notholdingmybreaththough
Theatrical Tuesdays – (03/08) Room, (03/15) The Night Before, (03/22) (03/29)… more 2016 Oscars related entries!
Wisdom Wednesdays – (03/09) health matters, (03/16) time management, (03/23) Pinterest, (03/30) New Yorker art section
Timely Thursday – (03/10) Libraries, (03/17) look at some of my art, (03/24) a concert, (03/31) Easter

See, I promised you a year of all killer, no filler. And I think we’re delivering so far. Right?

And I was “mostly” correct with my video release predictions for February too. We shared the Lucas Chaisson interview, Cross Talk Ep.2, and the Space:Nunz interview. The only one that got messed up was RTG, but I can promise you this, the RTG videos are going to be more content packed then originally anticipated, so I will do what I can to begin releasing them in March, but it all depends on how quickly post-production wraps up.

Now let’s talk more detail on the March timotheories interviews. This month we have a very talented multi-talented artist who is big advocate on education and manages to learn, run a business, and make art at the same time. You aren’t going to want to miss this one folks!

AND last, but definitely not least Cross Talk Ep.3 begins production this weekend. Have you ever watched a movie, and years later learned that a remake was coming down the road? I’m sure you wondered if the remake was going to be a shot-for-shot duplication, an homage or a re-imagining. We’re going to dive into this top on March 20th, so be sure pencil it in!

And that’s it dear readers, now you are in the know. I’m out of theories and timely things for the week, so have an excellent weekend, and I’ll catch you on Sunday for this month’s interview!

Of course you can leave some comments, and subscribe to the blog too!
